WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT:    'PROMISES TO GOD'

[Scripture in red indicates wisdom or instruction from our Savior and God's only Son, Jesus Christ.]

Proverbs 12: 22 The Lord hates those who don't keep their word, but He delights in those who do.

Proverbs 20: 25 It is dangerous to make a rash promise to God before counting the cost.

Ecclesiastes 5: 1-6 Don't anger God by making promises to Him you can't keep. Rather, keep your ears open and your mouth shut. And when you do make a promise to God, follow through without delay! Don't bother defending yourself to a priest about breaking your promise.

Matthew 5: 33-37 Jesus said, 'Don't make any vows! Just say a simple 'Yes I will' or 'No I won't.' Your word is enough. To strengthen your promise with a vow shows that something is wrong.'

Acts 5: 1-11 Better not to make a vow to the Lord that you cannot keep. Ananias and his wife, Sapphira, sold some land and promised to donate the full proceeds for the apostles of Jesus Christ, but they deceived the Holy Spirit. They both collapsed and died.

Romans 8: 26-27 The Holy Spirit is within us and prays for us in harmony with God's will. God knows what is truly in all hearts, and the Holy Spirit is our bridge of communication with God.

Hebrews 6: 16 When people take an oath, they call on someone greater than themselves to hold them to it. And without any question, that oath is binding.

James 5: 12 Never take an oath, by heaven or earth or anything else. Just say a simple yes or no, so that you will not sin and be condemned for it.

Results Can Vary: Common words are ignored (such as: "if, for, and, because, when, what, where..."). If a word is not found in our keyword database, that word is also ignored. For example, 'sowing love' could find a passage referring to forbidden foods listed in the Old Testament because 'sowing' is not a keyword and 'cloven' includes the characters 'love.' Finally, not all Bible text is searched. Only significant words are considered, although that list is being constantly refined.
Note to Readers: This is a condensed representation derived from several versions of the Christian Bible. Scripture and other information are presented here so readers can refer to and interpret the same passages in their preferred versions.
